Eat More And Weigh Less

One of the worst aspects of dieting is the restriction of food, and it's the key element in a lot of fad diets.  Here at RefrigeratorRaid.com, we tend to believe that simply choosing smarter foods--and moderating portions--is a better choice than a super-restrictive diet, especially if you want to maintain your weight loss for the long haul.  And a recent MSNBC.com article offered a smart way to satisfy your appetite while still losing weight.

Their suggestion is to choose low-calorie-dense foods--meaning foods that fill you up but aren't packed with calories.  Also known as "high volume" foods, these choices typically contain a lot of water.  Eating low-calorie-dense foods means you walk away from the meal satisfied without having consumed lots of unnecessary calories.

Here are a few examples of high volume foods:

•    Vegetables
•    Whole grains
•    Fruits
•    Broth-based soups
•    Beans & legumes

To make the switch to a low-calorie-dense diet, try these tips:

Start your meal right!  Choose a high volume food for your appetizer before dinner.  Good choices include broth-based soups and green salads that are packed with veggies.

Add high volume foods to regular dishes! When making soups, casseroles or other family favorites, add extra vegetables or beans.

Snack on high volume foods!  Fresh veggies and fruit make great snack foods.  Keep them handy so you can grab 'em whenever you're hungry.

Check the calories! When purchasing prepackaged foods, check the calories per serving.  You're looking for the foods with the fewest calories.

Limit calorie dense foods!  Common culprits include cheese, meat, crackers and fried foods.  Whenever possible, choose high volume foods instead.
